The Japanese video games company, which has transformed the industry with its innovative family-friendly games, is launching Walk with Me! for DS consoles.
If the game takes off, more than two million people in Britain that already have a DS could be taking more exercise in the New Year than they had planned.
The game comes with two small pedometers, not much bigger than a 50 pence piece, which family members are meant to carry around in their pocket or bag every day.
At the end of the week, the player points the pedometer at the DS console - as if it were a remote control. The more steps someone has taken the more points they earn, which unlock better games on the console.
For instance, Walk the World is a game that allows you to collect bits of geographical trivia with your collected steps. With a few thousands steps you can “draw” a picture of a global landmark. Once the picture is completed a piece of trivia is unlocked.
Nintendo’s team also hopes players from different countries will compete with each other by using the DS’s social activity platform. At the end of each week the company will list on its website the players that have walked the furthest that week.
